Spotlight: The Vanguard Brewpub & Distillery

In 1936, a new building was constructed in Hampton under the New Deal Initiative after the Great Depression. This new construction project was part of many funded to become armories for the National Guard across the mid-Atlantic. The Hampton National Guard Armory came to represent architecture “between two wars,” World War I and World War II. When not being used as an armory, it became a community center for Hampton, housing a gymnasium, events, and concerts. It is now listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register and National Register of Historic Places.

Now it houses the Vanguard Brewpub & Distillery. More than the smaller brewery you are probably imagining, this is a brewery and a distillery featuring beers and spirits made on-site, under the name Caiseal Beer & Spirits. Caiseal (pronounced cashel) is Gaelic for “ring fortress,” a name which brings to mind the historic armory that houses the brewery and distillery. This lineup is award-winning and includes vodka, gin, single malt whiskey, bourbon, speciality spirits, and dozens of craft beer styles. Whatever your preference, you’re bound to find it here.

The large space of the armory also acts as an entertainment venue. It features concerts with local and national musicians. It also has a full-service restaurant with seasonal items made to pair with the Caiseal Beer & Spirits. Whether you’re coming for an event or stopping by to taste some brew, The Vanguard is the place to be. This building is still bringing together the Hampton community as it has for decades.
